Venerable Dr. Yifa is the founder and director of the Woodenfish Foundation, an international, nonsectarian, nonprofit and non-governmental organization that has spent the past twenty years working to establish a global network of ethical and compassionate professionals, scholars, and leaders. She became a nun at Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Taiwan in 1979. She received a law degree from National Taiwan University, a MA in comparative philosophy from University of Hawaii and her Ph.D. in religious studies from Yale University in 1996. She has been the Dean at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist College and the Provost at Hsi Lai University, Rosemead, California, a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard University, a lecturer at Boston University and a faculty member at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan. She taught at McGill University as the Numata visiting professor in the spring of 2005 and served as the chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of the West in Los Angeles. She is currently an Associate at the Harvard University Asia Center.

James Robson is Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. He has served as Director of Graduate Studies for the Regional Studies East Asia M.A. program. He teaches East Asian religions, in particular Daoism, Chinese Buddhism, and Zen. Robson received his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Stanford University in 2002, after spending many years doing research in China, Taiwan, and Japan. He specializes in the history of medieval Chinese Buddhism and Daoism and is particularly interested in issues of sacred geography, local religious history, talismans, and Chan/Zen Buddhism. He has been engaged in a long-term collaborative research project with the École Française d’Extrême-Orient studying local religious statuary from Hunan province. He is the author of Power of Place: The Religious Landscape of the Southern Sacred Peak [Nanyue 南嶽] in Medieval China (Harvard, 2009), which was awarded the Stanislas Julien Prize for 2010 by the French Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres and the 2010 Toshihide Numata Book Prize in Buddhism. Robson is also the author of "Signs of Power: Talismanic Writings in Chinese Buddhism" (History of Religions 48:2), "Faith in Museums: On the Confluence of Museums and Religious Sites in Asia" (PMLA, 2010), and "A Tang Dynasty Chan Mummy [roushen] and a Modern Case of Furta Sacra? Investigating the Contested Bones of Shitou Xiqian." His current research includes a long term project on the history of the confluence of Buddhist monasteries and mental hospitals in Japan.

Hubbard is the author of books, articles and films on Buddhism in East Asia, including Pruning the Bodhi Tree (with Paul Swanson), Absolute Delusion, Perfect Buddhahood and the film The Yamaguchi Story: Buddhism and the Family in Japan. He also has extensive interests in the use of technology in Buddhist studies and has worked on numerous projects in the area of archiving Buddhist texts and digital publication, and more recently in the field of neuroscience and emerging technologies of awareness: Cyborg Buddha!

His research interests, mainly in Indian Buddhism, include abhidharma, early Yogācāra, Buddhist embryology, and Buddhist theories of rebirth. He has published three books: Rebirth and Causation in the Yogācāra Abhidharma (Arbeitskreis für Tibetische und Buddhistische Studien, Universität Wien); Vasubandhu and the Yogācārabhūmi: Yogācāra Elements in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. (International Institute for Buddhist Studies); Garbhāvakrāntisūtra: The Sūtra on Entry into the Womb. Studia Philologica Buddhica, (International Institute for Buddhist Studies). Currently, he is translating Sangs rgyas kyi mdzod for the organization, 84,000.

Jacob H. Hanna
Principal Investigator at the Weizmann Institute of Science

Born in Rama, an Israeli Palestinian-Arab village in the Galilee region of Israel, Prof. Jacob (Yaqub) Hanna earned his BSc in medical science (2001), PhD in immunology (2007), and MD in clinical medicine summa cum laude (2007) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He conducted postdoctoral research at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at MIT. He joined the department of Molecular Genetics at the Weizmann Institute in 2011.
Prof. Hanna is pioneering techniques in induced naïve pluripotency from adult cell and synthetic whole embryo models made solely from stem cells ex utero for regenerating new organs and tissues. Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells have regenerative properties almost identical to those of embryonic stem cells but can be created from adult cells without using an egg or fetal material. Prof. Hanna was the lead researcher in a study that showed how further-modified iPS cells could be used to treat sickle-cell anemia in mice, the first proof of concept of the therapeutic application of iPS cells. Prof. Hanna has uncovered novel pathways regulating the reprogramming process and was the first to derive pristine “naïve” human pluripotent cells equivalent to those derived from mice and (i) can generate “cross-species humanized chimeric” mouse models that have human derived tissues (ii) can give rise to human primordial germ cell (progenitors of egg or sperm) and restore fertility or (iii) to all extra-embryonic compartments (placenta and yolk-sac). He was the first to expand prolonged periods of advanced and normal mammalian embryo development from pre-gastrulation until late organogenesis in an “artificial uterus” environment outside the maternal womb. The latter platform enabled him to demonstrate the ability to be the first to generate advanced stage & whole synthetic embryos made entirely from naïve pluripotent stem cells in the petri dish, that can complete gastrulation and demonstrate organ formation within adequate extra-embryonic compartments. He adapted these approaches and was able to derive the first complete human embryo model equivalent to day 14 made from human naïve stem cells. In addition to demonstrating the power of cell reprogramming and ex utero advanced embryogenesis, his work offers the promise of new research models for restoring and rejuvenating organs, infertility, pregnancy failure and human tissue development.

He adapted these approaches and was able to derive the first complete human embryo model equivalent to day 14 made from human naïve stem cells. In addition to demonstrating the power of cell reprogramming and ex utero advanced embryogenesis, his work offers the promise of new research models for restoring and rejuvenating organs, infertility, pregnancy failure and human tissue development.

She is trained in reproductive medicine and has worked as a certified Obstetrician, Gynecologist, and Clinical Geneticist at multiple hospitals in Tokyo. In 2011, she became the first physician to earn a PhD from the University of Tokyo’s Department of Biomedical Ethics and later became faculty (part-time).
Her research is deeply interdisciplinary, encompassing domestic and international ethical regulations, government policies, public attitudes, and practices, with a strong focus on reproductive technologies. She has been an educator at the University of Tokyo and Yale University, teaching bioethics and medical ethics to students worldwide.
In addition to her academic work, Shizuko is also a children’s book writer and illustrator. She was awarded the Women’s Challenge Award at the G7 ministerial meeting in Japan in 2023 for her book, “The World Caught a Cold”, which addresses the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also written books on sex-education with Sanrio. Currently, another children’s book on genetics starting from the embryo is underway.

Michael Levin is currently Distinguished Vannever Bush Professor in the biology department at Tufts University and associate faculty at Harvard's Wyss Institute. She has devoted to be a nun after complete chief resident training and then still keep her career in cancer care. She is an idealism in connecting the Buddhism and clinical medicine, and also experienced in cancer patient’s care from a holistic perspective, take care of their physical disease as well as spiritual care. The unique character of her is that she also possesses Traditional Chinese Medicine and has applied TCM in cancer patients for years. Dr. Chien is now as an assistant professor in Institute of Traditional Medicine, School of Medicine, National Yang-Ming University, devoting her-self in integrating TCM in cancer care. Though she works in a western- medicine based City public hospital, she spends a lot time in TCM research and clinical practice. The reason is that she has observed so many cancer patients, who suffered from cancer- related symptom seeking for TCM help but hesitate to discuss with their clinical physicians, she wants to do something to coordinate these two branches of medicine (cultures) and meaningful to patients. Based on her clinical experience and research, some TCM indeed has the potential in improving symptoms related to cancer or enhancing efficiency of chemotherapy with confirmed safety. The mechanism is intriguing; some are compatible with immune stimulation theory yet need further study. Dr. Chien is pre-eminent in the field of Integrative Medicine for her background as an Oncologist and TCM doctor who also identified as a nun of buddhism, and she is willing to cooperate with more medical scientist, scholars or Philosopher who have an interest in multidisciplinary field and willing to do something meaningful and beneficial to general public and patients.

Gao earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Peking University in 2010, with a minor in Philosophy. He began his career as a rural teacher and later participated in founding several technology companies and educational institutions, advocating for the organic integration of science, technology, and the humanities. He is currently the Co-founder and CEO of Gene Origin, dedicated to leveraging synthetic biology to improve models of human development.
